Mother’s Day in Ireland

March 3rd 2021,
Mother Nature and Mother’s Day at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience

It has been a long winter, but we are happy that Spring is here and of course Mother’s Day.   Despite being closed and in these difficult and challenging times we are experiencing, it is starting to feel that we will come out the other end, the sun is shining, and we can now see the clear blue skies from our windows.

Mother Nature continues to weave her magic regardless of the recent calamitous event – you can see her handiwork becoming evident at the cliffs.   Spring welcomes the annual arrival of seabirds who choose the wonderfully peaceful and safe environment of the Cliffs to raise their young each year.  Over 30,000 pairs of nesting seabirds can be seen during the nesting period from April to July.   The Cliffs of Moher are designated as a special protected area for birds under the EU bird’s directive and we are fortunate to attract internationally important numbers of Guillemot, Razorbill as well as significant numbers of Puffins, Kittiwakes, and Fulmar.

From March the birds are courting and nesting and soon the Cliff edges, stack, and Goats’ Island will become one giant nursery as the chick’s hatch.  Mum and Dad must ensure they are fed, fledged, and ready for fleeing the nests by late July.

The seabird with the largest fan club is most likely the comical clown-faced puffin – we are delighted that contrary to other locations throughout Europe, the number of Puffins at the Cliffs are increasing.

The world may be in turmoil, but life continues normally for our residing birds and Mother Nature is casting a web of purity and beauty around us as the natural world takes advantage of this period of peace and calm.  We can take comfort from the inherent beauty we are experiencing all around us.
