Spring in Ireland

Mother Nature continues to weave her magic and you can see her handiwork at the cliffs.

With the arrival of Spring in Ireland, comes the annual appearance of seabirds who choose the wonderfully peaceful and safe environment of the Cliffs to raise their young each year. Over 30,000 pairs of nesting seabirds can be seen during the nesting period from April to July. The Cliffs of Moher are designated as a Special Protection Area for birds under the EU bird’s directive and we are fortunate to attract internationally important numbers of Guillemot, Razorbill as well as significant numbers of Puffins, Kittiwakes, and Fulmar.

From March the birds are courting and nesting and soon the Cliff edges, stack, and Goats’ Island will become one giant nursery as the chicks hatch.  Mum and Dad must ensure they are fed, fledged, and ready for fleeing the nests by late July.

Puffins - Cliffs of Moher

The seabird with the largest fan club is most likely the comical clown-faced puffin – we are delighted that contrary to other locations throughout Europe, the number of Puffins at the Cliffs are increasing.

Mother Nature is casting a web of purity and beauty around us as the natural world takes advantage of this period of peace and calm.
