Lonely planet Community Award 2021 - Cliffs of Moher

Winners of the Lonely Planet award in its ‘Best in Travel’ picks for 2021

The Burren Eco Tourism Network won the Lonely Planet award in its ‘Best in Travel’ picks for 2021. The group consists of more than 60 local enterprises including the Cliffs of Moher Experience, committed to sustainable tourism in the Burren limestone landscape and the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark.

It is the only Irish tourist project included in the Lonely Planet’s list of more than 30 global tourism enterprises.

The network was listed in the ‘Best in Community’ category.

Lonely Planet describes Burren Eco Tourism Network as an impressive community collaboration which has “transformed Ireland’s Burren and Cliffs of Moher geopark into a global leader for sustainable tourism”.

All enterprises involved in the network subscribe to the region’s code of sustainable practice, promoting slow tourism, local engagement and greater responsibility for a sustainable future.

Each business is encouraged to measure waste output, water consumption and energy usage and make reductions in these areas. Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2021 highlights people, destinations and tourism projects that shine a light on pioneering sustainable practices, regenerate local communities and promote representation in all aspects of travel.

The guide reflects how attitudes to travel have changed and how travellers are now focusing on ensuring the impact of their holiday is safe and positive for host communities and looks to the future of travel in a post-pandemic world.

Working together from 2011 to 2022

The Burren Ecotourism Network is a network of tourism enterprises with the objective of establishing The Burren as a premier internationally recognised sustainable tourism region ensuring the future economic and social growth and sustainable development of its communities, environment and heritage.

The Burren Ecotourism Network celebrated 10 years of working together in March 2021. The Cliffs of Moher Experience and BEN work together to promote ‘The Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark’ as a leading sustainable visitor destination.

Local folklore and food are promoted through Farm Heritage Tours and the Burren Food Trail. The Geopark promotes its geology and sensitive hydrogeological system (underground waterways) through educational and outreach activities whilst pursuing strong practices in sustainable tourism. It seeks to support continued training, mentoring and accreditation in sustainable tourism for its members and for businesses interested in joining the Network. It has a strong network of eco-businesses living within its iconic landscape of karst limestone, caves, and cliffs. Burren Ecotourism Network Members
